A antiga vila foi fundada pelo Padre José de Anchieta em 1585. O local era uma colônia de jesuítas que se dedicavam á aculturação dos índios Aimorés, Goitacazes, Purus e Tupiniquins. O crescimento foi muito devagar devido ao difícil acesso na época. Tornou-se cidade em 1891 com o nome indígena Guarapari. Só na metade do século XX foi que a cidade começou a se desenvolver.

Praia da Areia Preta - Beach of the Black Sand
Com faixas douradas e escuras, esta é a principal praia de areia monazítica de Guarapari. Além dos idosos que se enterram nas areias em busca de suas propriedades medicinais, muitos jovens freqüentam o local. É pequena, apenas 200m, e tem ondas fracas. Uma trilha sobre as pedras, no lado direito, leva à prainha das Pelotas, aos pés de uma falésia.

With gold and dark strips, this is the main beach of sand monazítica of Guarapari. Besides the seniors that they are buried in the sands in search of their medicinal properties, many young they frequent the place. It is small, only 200m, and has weak waves.
